ASOU Executive

Dr. Frank R. Asiimwe is a Consultant Urologist and Transplant Surgeon at Mulago National Specialized Hospital. He serves as the Chair, Department of Urology and the Chair, Organ Transplant Committee of Mulago National Specialized Hospital. He is also a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at King Ceaser University. Dr. Asiimwe is a Fistula Surgery Consultant for international organisations such as Mercy Ships and Danja Fistula Center. He had his undergraduate training at Mbarara University, His postgraduate training in General Surgery at Makerere University, a Master of Science in Urology at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College University, and a Fellowship in Advanced Urology and Renal Transplant Surgery from the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa. He is also trained in Health Administration from the International Christian Medical Institute. He is also a founder Fellow, Fistula Surgery of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Prof. Moses Galukande is a Professor of Surgery at Makerere University. He is the Chair of the Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine at the College of Health Sciences. He is also the Chair of the Clarke Internertional University Council. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), a Masters of Medicine (M. Med) in Surgery degree from Makerere University, and also a Master of Science in Health Professional Education (MScHPE) from Maastricht University, Netherlands and a Doctor of Philosophy in Breast Cancer. He is a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa, and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Prof. Galukande has numerous research publications in peer reviewed journals.

Dr. Edward Kakungulu is a General Surgeon at the Uganda Cancer Institute / East Africa Oncology Centre of Excellence. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Gulu University in Uganda and a Master of Medicine in Surgery from Makerere University. He has also been admitted to Harvard Medical School, Blavatnik Institute of Global Health and Social Medicine for a Master of Medical Science in Global Health Delivery. He has trained in Clinical epidemiology from the University of California San Francisco; Monitoring and Evaluation, Project Management, Leadership and Management in Health, and Implementation Science from the University of Washington, Department of Global Health. He is the first recipient of the Doug Altman Scholarship of the University of Oxford and also a 2017 Clinical Fellow of the Lee Jong Wook Fellowship Program, trained at the National Cancer Institute in South Korea. He served on the Young Professional Commission of the Lancet on the Education of Health Professionals for the 21^st Century. He is also engaged in research on use of mHealth and other digital health solutions to improve access to healthcare for people living in rural areas.

Dr. Were Flavia is a surgeon at Children’s Surgical Hospital in Entebbe. She has a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degree from Kampala International University and a Master of Medicine in Surgery from Makerere University. She is currently undertaking training in Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgery. She has served on the Executive Council of the Association of Surgeons of Uganda since 2019.

Dr. Ssettabi Eden Michael is a Pediatric and Neonatal Surgeon at Mulago National Specialized Hospital. He completed his Bachelors of Medicine and Bachelors of Surgery at Makerere University, College of Health Sciences, Kampala , then joined Common Wealth Fellowship in University of Liverpool for Common Wealth Fellowship in Clinical Research and later on a Masters of medicine in General Surgery at Makerere University, College of Health Sciences, Kampala. He is also a Common Wealth Fellow at Common Wealth Fellowship in University, Liverpool.

Dr. Anne Shikanda is a Pediatric and Neonatal Surgeon at Mulago National Specialized Hospital. She completed her undergraduate training at Gulu University, Joined Makerere University for her postgraduate training in General Surgery and the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa for a Fellowship in Pediatrics and Neonatal Surgery. She also completed Pediatric Surgery Fellowship at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. She is a recipient of a scholarship by the American College of Surgeons under the COSECSA Women Scholars Program.

Dr. Namugenyi is a General Surgeon working at Thika Level 5 Hospital in Kenya. She completed her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Kampala International University and a Master of Medicine in Surgery at Makerere University. She also completed a Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery by the World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons. She is also the Chief Executive Officer of Bambi & Kesta Love Ltd. – Kesta Fashion and a Member of the Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI).

Dr. Victor Kigonya is a Consultant Laparoscopic Surgeon at Kibuli Moslem Hospital. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Gulu University and a Master of Medicine in Surgery from Makerere University. He is also trained in Laparoscopic Surgery and Project planning Management. Dr. Victor serves as a member on the Academic and research Committee of the Society of Uganda Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons of Uganda.

Dr. Okidi Ronald is a Urologist at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu. He had his undergraduate training at Gulu University, Postgraduate training in General Surgery at Mbarara University and Fellowship training in Urology of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa.

Dr. Jehoshaphat Jombwe is a Senior Consultant and Head, Gastro Intestinal unit of the Directorate of Surgery, Mulago National Specialized Hospital. He is also a Council Member, Examiner and Uganda’s Country Representative to the College Of Surgeons Of East, Central and Southern Africa. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery; and Master of Medicine in Surgery from Makerere University. He is also a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa. He is an Honorary Associate Professor of Surgery at St Augustine University, Kampala and an Honorary Lecturer at the Department of Surgery, Makerere University College of Health Sciences. He served as the President of the Association of Surgeons of Uganda from 2011-2013. In the community, he is a Member of the Lukiiko (Parliament) in the Buganda Kingdom, and an Executive Member of St. Stephen Church of Uganda, Kabowa.

Dr. Nasser Kakembo is a Lecture at the Department of Surgery of the School of Medicine at Makerere University College of Health Sciences and practices Paediatric Surgery at Mulago National Specialized Hospital where he performs complex surgeries including separation of Siamese twins. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, and a Master of Medicine in Surgery from Makerere University. He completed a Fellowship of Pediatric Surgery of the College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Kakembo is a Member Board of Trustees of the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda (IMAU). He is a researcher with several publications in peer reviewed journals.

Emmanuel Bua is a specialist general surgeon at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in eastern Uganda and an honorary lecturer of Surgery at Busitema University Faculty of health sciences with special interest in paediatric and plastic surgery. Inspired by his mother, a nurse and midwife, he joined Makerere University medical school and graduated with an MBChB. He undertook a Master’s degree and fellowship in General Surgery. He is a board-certified member and fellow of the College of surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA). He represents Eastern Uganda on the executive committee of the Association of Surgeons of Uganda (ASOU). He has worked with the underserved and impoverished communities of Uganda, Ethiopia, Zambia and Kenya where he has experienced first-hand the importance of the social determinants of health and the need for robust healthcare systems. He also had the opportunity to interact with patients in the USA and Netherlands which gave him a clear perspective of the healthcare systems in developed economies and the need for collaborations between local and international partners in addressing health care challenges in Africa. He is a strong advocate for global health equity and believes in building resilient communities through training for transformation and global partnerships. Over the years of his practice, he has learnt that illness and health are intricately intertwined with socioeconomic conditions. He therefore advocates for healthcare that goes beyond merely offering medical treatment to patients. He believes that addressing systemic factors that contribute to illness and access to health is only possible if there is growth from being a frontline clinician to a global health leader. He believes in global partnerships, global health equity, leadership, clinical and social research, community engagement and support as important tools for advocacy. He is currently a global heath leadership fellow under the UCSF HEAL program as well as a CHESA fellow. As one of his passions, he spends a considerable amount of time teaching and mentoring medical students and the next generation doctors, specifically in undoing old traditions that have not been helpful over the years, and adopting a mindset that is open to change and innovation. He believes in making the road by walking it. Outside of his work, he enjoys reading, travelling, making friends, singing, dancing salsa and food.

Dr. Timothy Makumbi Kabanda is a Senior Lecturer at Makerere University College of Health Sciences and a specialist in Breast and Endocrine Surgery at Mulago National Specialized Hospital. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Mbarara University, a Masters of Medicine (M. Med) in Surgery degree from Makerere University, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Sikkim Manipal University/ ISBAT, a Diploma in Emergency Medicine from Sapienza, Rome University, and he is a PHD Fellow at Makerere University interrogating MicroRNAs Profiling, Bio-pathologic Characterization and Survival of Early Onset-breast Cancer among Ugandan Women. Dr. Makumbi also serves on the board of the Uganda Women Cancer Support Organisation, and is a Specialist General and Endocrine Surgeon with African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF), Flying Surgeons. He is a prolific researcher with several publications in peer reviewed Journals.

Holds a master of Neurosurgery from Lubeck university: Germany. He is a Fellow of neurosurgery of the college of Surgeons of East central and Southern Africa. He is a member of the European Associations of Neurological societies. He is an Executive member of The Continental Association of African Neurosurgical Societies (CAANS) He is the immediate past president of Association of surgeons of Uganda. He is the Secretary General of Neurosurgical society of Uganda. Assistant country program Director of neurosurgery training under the College of surgeons of East central and Southern Africa. Member of the Paediatric tumor Board of the Uganda Cancer institute.

Dr. Joel Kiryabwire is a Consultant Surgeon at Mulago National Specialized Hospital and the President, Neurosurgical Society of Uganda. He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), a Masters of Medicine (M. Med) in Surgery degree from Makerere University, and a Fellowship in Neurosurgery of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (Rowan Nicks Fellow). He also trained in Pediatric Neurosurgery. He is a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa. <strong>Dr. Kiryabwire is the Uganda’s Country Representative College of Surgeons of East Central and Southern Africa and was </strong>instrumental in the preparation of the curriculum for the Fellowship of Neurosurgery for the College of Surgeons of East central and Southern Africa. He also made a significant contribution in the development of the Master of Medicine Neurosurgical curriculum of Makerere University.

Dr. John Sekabira is a Senior Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, Mulago National Referral and Makerere University Teaching Hospital. He completed General Surgical Residency from Makerere University and Specialist Paediatric Surgery training from University of Kwazulu Natal-South Africa. He was the first recipient of the High Green Wood travelling fellowship to Alder Hey Hospital Liverpool and Great Machester Children Hospital in UK for three (3) months. Dr. Sekabira has given key note speeches at BAPs meeting Edinburg UK and is recipient of a Honorary life time Fellowship of the American Academy of Paediatrics in San Francisco USA (2016) after giving the Gans Stephen lecture at the meeting. He started the Paediatric Surgery training program which in collaboration with colleagues from UK and North America trained and graduated five (5) Paediatric Surgeons in seven (7) years under COSECSA; four (4) fellows are currently undergoing training. Dr. John Sekabira partnered with Archie foundation Scotland UK to create the first Paediatric Surgery theatre in Uganda. This went on to evolve Kids’OR that has constructed over 60 operating theatres for Children in Africa and South America. Dr. Sekabira is board member of GICS, and founding fellow of COSECSA. His clinical and research interests are in Neonatal Surgery and Paediatric Oncology.
